Mat foundation is also known as the raft foundation. It is considered as one type of shallow foundation and is useful in controlling the differential settlement.

A raft or mat foundation is a large continuous rectangular or circular concrete slab that carries the entire load of the superstructure and spreads it over the whole area beneath the building. Typically reinforced with a double layer of rebar throughout its pad a mat slab is capable of bearing loads at virtually any point and distributing heavy loads across an expanse of weak subsoil. And they are suitable for building on poor soil excluding peat and organics. Mat slabs are particularly well suited to sites on moderate slopes or where you will be cutting the building pad into a hillside.
